Sony’s XEL-1 OLED tv is only 3mm thick. Yes 3mm. It’s screen is 11 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 960 x 540. It’s got a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1. In its base you will find 2 1-watt speakers, HDMI, USB, and Ethernet connections, and a terrestrial digital tuner.
The tv’s dimensions are 287 x 140 x 253-mm and it weighs 2 kg (3.3 lbs). Sony’s XEL-1 will cost 200,000 Yen (or approximately $1740 US) and will be available in Japan on December 1st. No news on whether it will come to the US.
At 11 inches the market for this screen is limited. But I’m sure Sony will soon be offering OLED displays about twice and three times that screen size within a year or two. Regardless of its small screen size I would love to see this particular display in person.
OLED displays have a few advantages over other flat panel technologies such as LCD and plasma displays. Some of the benefits OLEDs offer are greater contrast , wider viewing angles, lower power consumption and are lighter weight.
